Election Committee
The Election Committee is a special committee of Council that reviews the regulations and procedures governing Council elections.
In 2010, the Election Committee began preparations for the next election of Council members, which will be held on April 10, 2012. Twenty-three Council members will be elected to Council and represent six regions, seven school systems, principals and vice-principals, supervisory officers, private schools and faculties of education.
The Election Committee approved a three-year budget for the election and detailed voting procedures.
During its initial meetings, the committee focused on the low voter turnout and low number of nominations received during the 2009 election. The feedback from voters and candidates during the 2009 election was considered along with the requirements of the election regulation.
In June, Council approved the committee’s recommendation that the Minister of Education revise the election regulation to decrease the number of nominators that each candidate require to complete their nomination package.
At the request of Council, the Election Committee also began investigating the possible designation of certain Council positions, consulted with education stakeholders and, in 2011, will assess the feedback we received.
