Quality Assurance Committee

The Quality Assurance Committee is a special committee of Council mandated to assess the performance of the College relative to the 11 objects, or purposes, set out for the College in the Ontario College of Teachers Act. In addition to reviewing each of the objects in turn, the committee also identifies opportunities to further support the achievement of these 11 objects and report, at a minimum, annually to Council.

In 2010, the committee initiated this object review by assessing the College policies and processes in place to regulate the profession of teaching and govern its members, and how the College performs the additional duties prescribed in its regulations.

The committee also looked at the tools the College uses to communicate with the public on behalf of its members; for example, its official publication and many outreach initiatives. This led to a discussion of new communication opportunities aimed at increasing member engagement with the College and recognizing the unique skills and knowledge of Ontario Certified Teachers.

At Council’s request, the committee undertook a review of the mandate and composition of the Executive Committee. At the December Council meeting, the committee proposed a series of recommendations based on external research, presentations from external governance experts and input from Council members and members of past Executive Committees. In 2011, Council will consider possible amendments to legislation and the College bylaws to refocus the Executive Committee mandate and adjust the committee composition accordingly.
