Election Committee

The Election Committee is a special committee of Council that reviews the regulations and procedures governing Council elections.

Effective July 1, 2015, the Election Committee will be combined with the Nomination Committee to form the new Governance Committee. The mandate of the Election Committee will be part of this new Council committee.

In 2014, the Election Committee continued preparations for the next election of Council members. The teaching profession will elect 23 Council members on April 7, 2015. Members will be elected from six regions and seven school systems, with special category positions for principals and vice-principals, supervisory officers, private schools and faculties of education.

The Election Committee approved the voting procedures for the election. Required by regulation, these procedures detail the process, protocols and timelines for all elements of the election. The committee also reviewed the 2015 nomination form and the voter list development process.

The Election Committee remains focused on increasing candidate and voter awareness of the election to encourage greater voter participation in 2015. To that end, the committee began to investigate options for simplifying the election ballot for members. Members who receive a general teacher ballot during the election have a choice of up to nine positions for which they are eligible to cast a vote. One possible change is to the allocation of regional positions within the province. The committee consulted with education stakeholders and will assess the feedback in 2015.
